I'm an avid home canner, having been bitten by the bug from my mother when I was a kid. For fun, I teach canning classes at conferences and my local college. As I always tell my students, this is an important investment and not a place to cut corners. I've tried a variety of pressure canners over the years and after I discovered the ALL AMERICAN at a friend's house, I've been hooked. These are well-built with metal-on-metal seals, and as important as food safety is, I absolutely prefer having not only the pressure regulator weight, but the pressure gauge and over-pressure plug. This is the type of unit you will have for decades and pass on to the next generation since they don't wear out and you can easily replace parts.

I visited their foundry this winter in Wisconsin and that's when I decided to sell their canners. The foundry has been in business since 1908 and has been making these canners since the 1930's. The first model I bought was the 921. It'll hold 19 pints or 7 quarts. I've had mine for 15 years and it's still going strong. The 921 is our best seller and is a good unit for the beginner to the seasoned canner. I recently purchased a Model 930 since you can double stack quarts for a total of 14. Try to pick a unit that matches the amount of canning you realistically think you will do. A full canner operates more efficiently.

If you've read this far, I'm excited that you are considering an All American. I really enjoy canning for a variety of reasons. Few things are as rewarding for me as growing and processing my own food. It saves money. It's fun and it's a great lesson for my kids. They've grown up watching me can on weekends and are now old enough to participate. They take pride in pointing out that they helped make some of the foods we enjoy. And they know where their food comes from!
